How to participate in the Abilympics for the first time
The Abilympics Helsinki 2027, a global skills competition for people with special needs, will take place at Messukeskus Helsinki, Finland, from 10 to 13 May 2027. The event will be held alongside Taitaja 2027, creating the unique Skills Games mega-event. Everyone is warmly invited – competitors, supporters, and international visitors alike – whether you’re a newcomer or an experienced Abilympics attendee.
Who can take part?
Abilympics is open to professionals at least 15 years old (or those who have completed compulsory schooling) who require special support due to a disability. This includes developmental, cognitive, psychological, physical, or sensory challenges. To participate, competitors must provide a medical certificate confirming their need for special support during registration.
Each participating country or region must be a member of the International Abilympic Federation (IAF). If your country or region is not yet a member, you can easily apply for IAF membership for your organisation free of charge before registering.
Registration and fees
Each country/region is invited to send one delegation, with up to two competitors per skill. Individuals cannot register for the competition themselves. IAF member organisations in each country or region select the participants for the competition.
Apart from competitors, the delegation normally consists of judges, competition officials, technical advisers, interpreters and at least one team leader. The country/region may also send observers to the competition.
Registration for the competition opens in September 2026 and closes in November 2026. Detailed instructions will be sent to IAF members before registration begins.
The registration fee is €480 per participant, which includes competition entry, meals, excursions, ceremonies, and airport transfers. A reduced fee may be available through an aid programme, covering up to 50% of costs.
Visa support
We’re here to help with the visa process. Visa invitation letters will be sent in November 2026, based on registration data, to all delegations requiring a visa to travel to Finland.
Schengen visa applications can be submitted up to six months before the event – we strongly recommend applying early.
For Visitors
The event is free of charge and open to the public from 11 to 13 May 2027.
We look forward to welcoming you to Helsinki! Visitor information will be published on this website, abilympics2027.com, as the event approaches – so please stay tuned.
